About us: What is Adelphi Debate?

Founded by current Harvard Law student Elina Kats, and further developed by another current HLS student, former President John Miller, the Adelphi Debate Society has an increasingly strong presence on the Adelphi University campus in Garden City, New York. Previous e-board members have shaped the legacy of the club and created a long-lasting institution with admirable aims and aspirations. The goal of the organization is to build critical and analytical thinking skills, introduce members to various public speaking techniques and improve speaking styles (using rhetorical devices), and encourage persuasive argumentation. Members discuss issues in the framework of British Parliamentary style, with 4 teams of 2 (with 2 teams on the Government side, 2 teams on the Opposition side), each individual speaker with his/her own role to fulfill in a seven-minute speech. Debating is a rigorous activity that can contribute to any collegiate community, and we hope to bring inviting and energetic discussions to our university through our activities.

In addition to hosting our own annual tournament, Brown and Gold, we are honored to represent Adelphi at other competitive tournaments nationwide.

^Our former President, Ameena, and Vice President, Colleen, won Second Place overall at the King's College tournament. Very proud of them!

^AUDS hosted a very successful "Brown and Gold" this year (2013). Great turn-out, great motions, and great discussions.

^We don't just debate. We also arrange community service events and activities (we're assembled here for one of them), in addition to organizing events such as Leg Up for Law School (to connect students, faculties, and lawyers in a network of engaging conversation and communication).
